Innovation is often celebrated for speed or curiosity, but genuine progress is about inclusion and expanding the populations that benefit from new technologies.

For example, at Yale University, nursing students are now utilizing a hyper-realistic patient mannequin with Down syndrome, which not only mimics appearance but also fosters both empathy and competence in medical professionals who will treat people of all abilities. Tools like this remind us that innovation is not only about what is new, but also about how we include everyone in progress.

Inclusive Technology: What It Means

Inclusive technology design begins with diverse users in mind, including people living with disabilities such as blindness, hearing loss, or limb loss. Additionally, neurodiverse learners and those with varied learning styles benefit from inclusive technology. The purpose is to create tools that serve everyone in their homes, classrooms, workplaces, and public spaces. Inclusive technology is not only about empathy, but also equity. Innovation bridges gaps and extends access to all people.

National and Local Innovations Advancing Inclusion

Across the country, inclusive technology is transforming access for individuals with varying abilities. Robotics adapted for visually impaired students, audio-virtual reality labs for immersive learning, and AI-based platforms that personalize lessons for students are helping students engage in ways traditional tools cannot. These innovations are not just technical; instead, they are also deeply human, designed to expand access and opportunity for every learner.

Locally, Houston-based organizations demonstrate how inclusive tech can be paired with supportive programs to amplify impact:

  • BridgingApps, a program of Easter Seals of Greater Houston, provides assistive-tech labs and mobile devices for children and adults with disabilities, helping students communicate, learn, and connect in ways they may not have thought possible before.
  • MADE Houston creates adaptive classroom environments for twice-exceptional learners (gifted students with learning differences), ensuring that both their strengths and challenges are incorporated in the curriculum and class experiences.

Both programs partner with Camp For All to provide barrier-free camp experiences to their students.

Innovative technology has the power to change student outcomes and improve the quality of life. Reports such as Inclusive Technology in a 21st Century Learning System show that students with disabilities who have access to these tools are two to three times more likely to graduate from high school than those without.

Complementing these technology-driven advances are experiential programs that create community and empowering experiences.

Camp For All, for example, offers medically safe and adaptive camp experiences for children and adults with challenging illnesses, disabilities, or special needs. Camp For All demonstrates how barrier-free environments, combined with opportunities to explore and try new activities, foster confidence and resilience in campers, such as those who benefit from Easter Seals of Greater Houston and MADE Houston camps.

Why This Matters

When tools and technologies are designed to include everyone, the impact has the potential to impact all people. Individuals with physical, sensory, or learning differences gain confidence and access to opportunities, which leads to more diverse workforces and stronger communities.

Technology, educational tools, and thoughtfully designed programs can reduce barriers, improve academic outcomes, and help prepare individuals for future employment and independent living. Conversely, failing to design inclusively can further entrench inequities related to race, income, and abilities.

For context, while the national graduation rate for students with disabilities has risen to 74%, it still lags behind the 88% rate for peers without disabilities. Technology and inclusive programs help bridge this gap, ensuring that not only more students graduate, but that individuals with disabilities also are better prepared to access higher education, participate fully in the workforce, and engage in social and civic life.

Inclusive tools, such as accessible transportation services, audible pedestrian signals, braille ballots for voting, and short-term device loan programs like TTAP, expand opportunities and promote equitable participation across all aspects of society.

Additionally, research shows that early exposure and inclusion of those living with disabilities, such as in classrooms, community spaces, and club activities, fosters a greater acceptance of differences and proclivity toward inclusive attitudes as children mature. When we begin focusing on acceptance and innovative solutions for all people from the very beginning, our communities are stronger and we increase access to participation for all.

Challenges, Opportunities, and Ripple Effects

Despite progress, obstacles to scaling inclusive technology remain. Many families and schools cannot afford high-end assistive devices, and tools are often developed without input from the users who will rely on them the most.

Although grants and pilot programs exist, systemic funding and support are still limited. Educators, healthcare providers, and city planners also require training and guidance to effectively implement these tools. Overcoming these challenges requires coordinated efforts among technology companies, educators, nonprofits, policymakers, and the communities they serve.

Houston’s rich mix of innovation, research institutions, and nonprofit networks makes it an ideal testing ground for inclusive technology, and we are seeing more advancements daily. Schools and early learning centers are piloting innovative tools, including adaptive learning software, interactive robotics, music therapy, and word prediction programs.

At the same time, medical and therapy programs use simulation labs and telehealth tools to improve treatment for children and adults with disabilities. Civic and public spaces are also becoming more accessible through smart city initiatives such as wayfinding apps, inclusive playgrounds, and sensory-friendly public areas. These examples demonstrate that inclusive technology is about creating meaningful opportunities for everyone, regardless of ability, background, or resources.

When inclusion is prioritized, the benefits extend far beyond individual users. Educational outcomes improve as more students meet learning goals and graduate successfully. Workforce readiness increases as a broader range of skills and abilities enters the labor market. Community equity grows as individuals from underserved communities gain access to tools and experiences that were previously inaccessible.

Increasing participation for students and individuals translates into stronger local and state economies. At its core, inclusive technology creates equity and resilience at both the individual and community level.

Moving Forward

Designing with empathy, investing in equitable access, and acting with urgency are essential to building communities where everyone has the opportunity to contribute. Houston, with its combination of medical research institutions, ed-tech startups, aerospace leadership, nonprofit networks, and pilot programs, is uniquely positioned to lead the nation in inclusive innovation.

By prioritizing technology and programs that serve all learners, the city can demonstrate that meaningful progress is measured not by speed or novelty, but by the number of people who benefit from it. When cities, organizations, and communities commit to inclusive design, they build stronger and more equitable places where everyone benefits and thrives.

Texas is the 4th hardest working state in America, report finds

It's no secret that Texans are hardworking people. To align with the Labor Day holiday, a new WalletHub study asserts that the Lone Star State is one of the five most hardworking states in America for 2025.

The report ranked Texas the fourth most hardworking state this year, indicating that its residents are working harder than ever after the state fell into seventh place in 2024. Texas previously ranked No. 4 in 2019 and 2020, slipped into No. 5 in 2021 and 2022, then continued falling into sixth place in 2023. But now the state is making its way back to the top of the list.

WalletHub's analysts compared all 50 states based on "direct" and "indirect" work factors. The six "direct" work factors included each state's average workweek hours, employment rates, the share of households where no adults work, the share of workers leaving vacation time unused, and other data. The four "indirect" work factors consisted of workers' average commute times, the share of workers with multiple jobs, the annual volunteer hours per resident, and the average leisure time spent per day.

North Dakota landed on top as the most hardworking state in America for 2025 for another year in a row, earning a score of 66.17 points out of a possible 100. For comparison, Texas ranked No. 4 with 57.06 points. Alaska (No. 2), South Dakota (No. 3), and Hawaii (No. 5) round out the top five hardest working states.

Across the study's two main categories, Texas ranked No. 5 in the "direct" work factors ranking, and earned a respectable No. 18 rank for its "indirect" work factors.

Broken down further, Texans have the second-longest average workweek hours in America, and they have the 12th best average commute times. Texans have the 6th lowest amount of average leisure time spent per day, the report also found.

According to the study's findings, many Americans nationwide won't take the chance to not work as hard when presented with the opportunity. A 2024 Sorbet PTO report found 33 percent of Americans' paid time off was left unused in 2023.

"While leaving vacation time on the table may seem strange to some people, there are plenty of reasons why workers choose to do so," the report's author wrote. "Some fear that if they take time off they will look less dedicated to the job than other employees, risking a layoff. Others worry about falling behind on their work or are concerned that the normal workflow will not be able to function without them."

5 ways technology is transforming the workplace for people with disabilities

When Camp For All opened its barrier-free gates more than 30 years ago, our founders believed that design could level the playing field for children and adults with challenging illnesses, disabilities, or special needs. Today, that same philosophy is necessary for workplaces across Greater Houston and beyond; only now the ramps and handrails are digital as much as physical, powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and innovation.

Technology has significantly transformed the workplace for individuals with disabilities, making it easier for them to perform their roles with greater efficiency and independence. Tools such as ergonomic workstations, adaptive keyboards, closed captioning, dictation software, screen magnifiers, and robotics help customize the work environment to accommodate various needs. Additionally, advancements in remote work technology have opened the door to broader employment opportunities, reducing physical barriers to participation in the workforce.

Here are five ways that technology turns “reasonable accommodation” into universal enablement and why every employer should take note.

From closed-captioning to real-time conversation

Ten years ago, businesses relied upon human typists and translators to convert conversations and presentations for those with disabilities. Today, AI speech-to-text engines like Microsoft 365’s Live Captions or Google Workspace’s Meet Transcripts render spoken words into on-screen text across 40-plus languages and dialects in milliseconds. This means deaf and hard-of-hearing employees can follow rapid brainstorming sessions without waiting for a post-meeting transcript.

If you are not already using these tools in your workplace, it is easy to start. Most of these services are free or very low-cost, but produce a high return in employee productivity. Individuals with hearing deficiencies can participate in real-time conversations, give feedback, and bring their unique perspectives to the conversation. These tools also enhance productivity for the larger team by providing all employees with a greater flow of ideas, engagement, and recall.

Voice is the new keyboard

Voice assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Windows Voice Access have matured into integrated tools for everyday life and business. They can now handle paragraph-length dictation, code snippets, and complex spreadsheet commands.

Workers with limited dexterity or sight can participate fully in work tasks, which can level the playing field so everyone can succeed and contribute significantly to the workplace. Additionally, voice-assisted technology can help older employees or employees with differing physical needs continue working longer and retain vital organizational knowledge and expertise, contributing to their team's success.

Readability and writing coaches at scale

The new and highly sensitive AI-powered editors, such as GrammarlyGO and Microsoft Editor, flag jargon, suggest plain-language rewrites, and even adjust tone for cognitive accessibility. This can be a game-changer for neurodivergent professionals, including people with dyslexia or ADHD, as they have to use less brain power decoding dense emails and can get help writing responses in their workplace correspondence.

Again, these free or low-cost tools enable all team members to contribute their unique ideas and perspectives when working together to address workplace challenges, better serve clients, and increase productivity.

Alternative text that captures context

Image-recognition models can now draft alt-text beyond “blue shirt on chair.” Tools like Adobe’s Intelligent Captioning or Meta’s Automatic Alt Text describe emotion, action, and even brand context, giving screen-reader users a richer experience.

Employees with blindness or low vision are more likely to navigate online documents, presentations, and requests independently. These technologies also reduce workloads on marketing teams and help them meet accessibility standards without extensive labor and time.

For businesses that want a varied workforce that brings multiple perspectives, these tools give them a power that hasn’t been harnessed before. If employees living with disabilities have more tools at their disposal, they can, in turn, target specific customers in new ways.

Robots and exoskeletons

Many of us remember The Jetsons cartoon show from the 1960s and how far-fetched their housekeeper robot Rosie seemed then. But now, affordable robots and wearable devices to support employees with spinal cord injuries, chronic pain, and disabilities are helping perform repetitive tasks and reducing strain for everyday work tasks.

These devices may revolutionize unemployment to full-time employment opportunities for many individuals. Devices like ABB’s GoFa and Ottobock’s Paexo can help employers reduce injury claims and retain skilled staff; it’s truly a win-win for employees and employers.


The impact is universal

Eight-foot-wide accessible sidewalks, like the ones we have at Camp For All, help wheelchair users, parents pushing a stroller, and travelers rolling luggage. Similarly, AI captions level the playing field for hearing-impaired colleagues, neurodiverse team members, aging professionals, and every employee skimming a meeting on mute. When we treat accessibility as an innovation driver rather than a compliance checklist, we unleash the potential of productivity, loyalty, and creativity throughout our organizations and companies.

Houston lab-test startup seeks $1M for nationwide expansion

Health care industry veteran Jim Gebhart knew there had to be a better way for patients to access lab services, especially those with high health insurance deductibles or no insurance at all.

“This challenge became deeply personal when a close family member developed a serious illness, and we struggled to secure prompt appointments,” Gebhart tells InnovationMap. “It’s incredibly frustrating when a loved one cannot receive timely care simply because of provider shortages or the limited capacity of traditional clinics.”

Driven by the desire to knock down lab-test barriers, Gebhart founded Houston-based TheLabCafe.com in 2024. The platform provides access to low-cost medical tests without requiring patients to carry health insurance. TheLabCafe serves patients in six states: Texas, Georgia, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Gebhart, the startup’s CEO, says that by the end of March, LabCafe will be offering services in 20 more states and the District of Columbia.

Gebhart has spent more than 30 years in the lab industry. His career includes stints at Austin-based Clinical Pathology Laboratories, Ohio’s Cleveland Clinic Laboratories and Secaucus, New Jersey-based Quest Diagnostics.

“Since nearly 80 percent of disease diagnoses rely on laboratory testing, I decided to leverage my background to create a more accessible, self-directed process for individuals to order blood and urine tests on their own terms — when and where they need them,” says Gebhart.

So far, Gebhart is self-funding the startup. But he plans to seek $700,000 to $1 million in outside investments in late 2026 to support the nationwide expansion and the introduction of more services.

TheLabCafe contracts with labs for an array of tests, such as cholesterol, hepatitis, metabolic, testosterone, thyroid and sexually transmitted infection (STI) tests. A cholesterol test obtained through TheLabCafe might cost $29, compared with a typical cost of perhaps $39 to $59 without insurance.

A health care professional reviews every test, both when the test is ordered and when the results are delivered, often within 24 hours. After receiving test results, a patient can schedule a virtual visit with a health care professional to go over the findings and learn potential treatment options.

Gebhart says TheLabCafe particularly benefits uninsured patients, including those in Texas. Among the states, Texas has the highest rate of uninsured residents. U.S. Census Bureau data shows 21.6 percent of adults and 13.6 percent of children in Texas lacked health insurance in 2024.

“Uninsured patients often pay the highest prices in the health care system,” Gebhart explains. “We address this by offering straightforward pricing and convenient access to testing without requiring insurance.”

“Our rates are intentionally set to remain affordable, helping individuals take a proactive approach to their health,” he adds. “Regular testing enables people to identify potential health issues early and track their progress as they make lifestyle changes. Ultimately, you can’t measure improvement without data — and laboratory results provide that data.”

Houston geothermal startup secures $97M Series B for next-gen power

Houston-based geothermal energy startup Sage Geosystems has closed its Series B fundraising round and plans to use the money to launch its first commercial next-generation geothermal power generation facility.

Ormat Technologies and Carbon Direct Capital co-led the $97 million round, according to a press release from Sage. Existing investors Exa, Nabors, alfa8, Arch Meredith, Abilene Partners, Cubit Capital and Ignis H2 Energy also participated, as well as new investors SiteGround Capital and The UC Berkeley Foundation’s Climate Solutions Fund.

The new geothermal power generation facility will be located at one of Ormat Technologies' existing power plants. The Nevada-based company has geothermal power projects in the U.S. and numerous other countries around the world. The facility will use Sage’s proprietary pressure geothermal technology, which extracts geothermal heat energy from hot dry rock, an abundant geothermal resource.

“Pressure geothermal is designed to be commercial, scalable and deployable almost anywhere,” Cindy Taff, CEO of Sage Geosystems, said in the news release. “This Series B allows us to prove that at commercial scale, reflecting strong conviction from partners who understand both the urgency of energy demand and the criticality of firm power.”

Sage reports that partnering with the Ormat facility will allow it to market and scale up its pressure geothermal technology at a faster rate.

“This investment builds on the strong foundation we’ve established through our commercial agreement and reinforces Ormat’s commitment to accelerating geothermal development,” Doron Blachar, CEO of Ormat Technologies, added in the release. “Sage’s technical expertise and innovative approach are well aligned with Ormat’s strategy to move faster from concept to commercialization. We’re pleased to take this natural next step in a partnership we believe strongly in.”

In 2024, Sage agreed to deliver up to 150 megawatts of new geothermal baseload power to Meta, the parent company of Facebook. At the time, the companies reported that the project's first phase would aim to be operating in 2027.

The company also raised a $17 million Series A, led by Chesapeake Energy Corp., in 2024.
